Description of the location
Guglionesi is an Italian commune with a population of about 5,000 people, located in the province of Campobasso in the Molise region. It is the largest commune in the region with an area of just over 100 km².
According to some researchers, the toponym "Guglionesi" derives from "guglia," a characteristic plant that grew on the banks of the nearby Biferno River; others believe the name comes from the combination of "colle-nisyus" ("Hill of Nisyus"), alluding to the god of wine Bacchus.
The most picturesque part of Guglionesi is the historical part of the town, surrounded by three parallel main streets and preserving interesting monuments such as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with the elegant crypt of Saint Adam and the Church of San Nicola, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque art in Molise.
From the lookout point in the highest part of the old town, there are breathtaking views of the green valleys, the Biferno River, Lake Guardialfiera, and the coastline.
Guglionesi has a developed infrastructure and convenient transport links. The nearest large city, Termoli, is only 14 km away. Ferries from the port of Termoli go to the picturesque Tremiti Islands and Croatia.
Distances to the nearest airports: Pescara – 110 km; Naples – 200 km; Bari – 213 km; Rome (Fiumicino) – 300 km.
